Saraswathi Jois (born 1941) is the senior-most female master of the Ashtanga Yoga lineage and the eldest daughter of the legendary Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. A fearless pioneer who broke social barriers in India, Saraswathi was the first woman admitted to the Mysore Sanskrit College and the first female teacher in Mysore history to lead integrated classes. For over five decades, she has preserved the authentic Ashtanga Parampara from her shala in Gokulam, Mysuru.
Core Methodologies & Classical Ashtanga Pillars
- Traditional Mysore Style (Self-Paced): One-on-one individualized guidance within a silent group environment, allowing students to progress safely at their own pace through Primary (Yoga Chikitsa) and Intermediate (Nadi Shodhana) series.
- The Tristhana Method: Integrating the three core focal points of classical Ashtanga: precise posture alignment (Asana), rhythmic ocean breath (Ujjayi Pranayama with bandhas), and steady visual focus (Drishti) to induce moving meditation.
- Sanskrit Chanting & Yoga Philosophy: Grounding physical practice in Patanjaliβs Ashtanga (Eight Limbs), traditional opening and closing Shanti mantras, and lifestyle discipline.
- Maternal & Inclusive Mastery: Combining strict traditional fidelity with a nurturing, compassionate presence that supports practitioners of all ages, backgrounds, and body types.
