Bhante Gunaratana & 'Mindfulness in Plain English': Why It Matters

Ask a room of Western meditators which book first made the practice click for them, and one title comes up again and again: Mindfulness in Plain English. Its author, Bhante Henepola Gunaratana — affectionately known as "Bhante G" — is one of the most influential Sri Lankan meditation teachers of the modern era.

From a Sri Lankan Village to a West Virginia Forest

Born in 1927 in the village of Henepola, he was ordained as a novice monk at just 12 years old. His path took him from Sri Lanka to India — where he worked for years serving marginalised communities — and on to Malaysia, before he arrived in the United States in 1968. He went on to earn a PhD in philosophy and to teach at university, all while deepening his own practice. In 1985 he founded the Bhavana Society, a forest monastery and retreat centre in West Virginia that has trained thousands of practitioners.

Why 'Mindfulness in Plain English' Became a Classic

Before Bhante G, much meditation instruction in English was either too vague or buried in technical Pali. His gift was to strip vipassanā down to clear, honest, practical language — without watering down the depth of the tradition. He explained exactly what to do with the breath, what the mind will actually do in response, and how to work with distraction, boredom, and doubt. It reads like a wise, funny friend sitting beside you, not a scripture. That accessibility is why it has introduced millions of people to mindfulness of breathing and insight practice.

His Wider Teaching

Beyond that first book, Bhante G has written on the full arc of the path: the Buddha's practical framework for happiness through the Eightfold Path, the concentration states of jhāna, the four foundations of mindfulness, and the practice of loving-kindness. Across all of it runs the same voice: warm, clear, occasionally very funny, and relentlessly practical.

What Makes His Approach Special

  • Plain language. No jargon for its own sake — everything is explained so a beginner can actually use it.
  • Honesty about difficulty. He never pretends meditation is easy; he tells you exactly where you'll get stuck and what to do.
  • Depth beneath simplicity. His simplicity is the fruit of decades of practice, not a shortcut around it.

Bhante G carries the same Theravada lineage preserved by masters like Venerable Balangoda Ananda Maitreya — but he translated it, quite literally, into a language the modern world could hear.
