White (Light) Kasina for Beginners

If you are starting kasina meditation, the tradition itself points to a clear first choice. In the Visuddhimagga, Buddhaghosa notes that the white kasina produces an especially bright, clear mind and a luminous counterpart sign β€” which makes it the gentlest, most reliable object for a beginner.

This guide assumes you have read the complete step-by-step kasina guide; here we focus on the white kasina specifically.

Why White (or Light)?

Three reasons. First, a plain white disc has no distracting detail, so the mind settles quickly. Second, the counterpart sign that arises is naturally radiant, which is encouraging and easy to recognise. Third, white and light are closely related to the luminous quality of a concentrated mind, so the practice feels coherent. The light kasina β€” a circle of bright light rather than a white object β€” works almost identically and is a fine alternative.

Making a White Kasina

Take a circle of white card or cloth, roughly the size of a saucer (traditionally about a span and four fingers across), evenly white, with no pattern. Mount it on a neutral, darker background so the edges are clear. Place it about an arm's length away at eye level. If you prefer a light kasina, use a soft circular light source or a bright reflection of daylight.

Step-by-Step

  1. Settle. Sit upright and stable. Take a few slow breaths and let the body relax.
  2. Gaze softly. Rest your eyes on the white disc, taking in the whole circle. Silently note "white… white…". Keep the eyes relaxed and blink normally.
  3. Internalise. After a few minutes, close your eyes and look for the white after-image. When it fades, reopen and re-establish. Repeat patiently.
  4. Brighten. As the sign stabilises it becomes a smooth, glowing white disc in the mind's eye β€” the counterpart sign. Rest here and let it grow luminous and steady.
  5. Deepen. Guard the sign gently, keep the hindrances at bay, and let the mind sink into it.

Tips for Beginners

  • Consistency beats duration. Fifteen to twenty minutes daily is ideal at first.
  • Do not chase the sign. Grasping makes it vanish. Hold a light, patient interest.
  • If the mind is too agitated to settle, spend a few minutes on the breath or on loving-kindness first to calm it, then return to the disc.

Once your white sign is stable, everything you learn transfers to any other kasina. When you are ready to go further, read kasina to jhana. For guided concentration support at home, see our best meditation apps guide β€” Insight Timer has a large free library of Theravada-style practices.
