Kasina to Jhana: How Concentration Becomes Absorption

Kasina practice has one destination: jhana, the states of deep meditative absorption. Once you can steady the counterpart sign, the remaining path is a natural deepening rather than a new technique. This post maps that transition. For the wider Sri Lankan context of these states, see our piece on jhana meditation in Sri Lanka.

Access Concentration

When the luminous counterpart sign is stable and the five hindrances are suppressed, the mind enters access concentration (upacara-samadhi). Here you are on the threshold: calm, bright, and unified, but the absorption is not yet locked in. The mind can still slip out. The task is simply to keep resting with the sign, gently and continuously, without grasping.

The Five Jhana Factors

As access concentration matures, five mental factors strengthen and lock together. When they do, the mind "drops in" to the first jhana:

  1. Applied attention (vitakka) โ€” the mind placed onto the sign.
  2. Sustained attention (vicara) โ€” the mind kept continuously on the sign.
  3. Rapture / joy (piti) โ€” an energising delight that can feel like waves, tingles, or lightness.
  4. Happiness / contentment (sukha) โ€” a deep, quiet ease.
  5. One-pointedness (ekaggata) โ€” the mind unified on a single object.

The Progression of the Jhanas

The classical model describes four rupa (form) jhanas, each subtler than the last:

  • First jhana โ€” all five factors present. Joy and happiness are strong; there is still a faint movement of attention onto the sign.
  • Second jhana โ€” applied and sustained attention drop away. The mind rests in joy and happiness with serene inner confidence.
  • Third jhana โ€” the coarser rapture fades, leaving a refined, stable happiness and deep equanimity.
  • Fourth jhana โ€” even happiness grows still. What remains is profound equanimity and one-pointedness โ€” a mind utterly bright, steady, and clear.

Beyond these lie the four formless attainments, which the space and consciousness kasinas open toward โ€” but those are for later, under guidance.

How to Actually Drop In

You do not force jhana; you allow it. The move is to relax into the counterpart sign and let the joy and happiness build on their own. Grasping for absorption keeps you out of it. The most reliable instruction is the oldest one: keep the mind on the sign, keep letting go, and let concentration do its work.

Practising Toward Jhana Today

Jhana is best learned on retreat or with a teacher, and Sri Lanka's forest monasteries remain among the finest places in the world to do so. If you are building the foundation at home, Waking Up offers some of the clearest modern instruction on concentration and the jhanas, and Insight Timer hosts many Theravada teachers.
